Shorin-ryu Karate
Okinawan Shorin-ryu is one of the oldest codified styles of traditional karate. Far from being a simple sport, it is a martial art focused on self-defense and personal development, both physical and mental.
The uniqueness of Shorin-ryu lies in its extraordinary ability to adapt to its practitioners: a discipline suitable for everyone, regardless of age, gender, or physical build.
Our mission and direct connection to Okinawa
To ensure authentic, "old-fashioned" teaching, we travel annually to Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. We are one of the very few in Europe to boast a direct and constant connection to the original source of our art, guided by the knowledge that the path of study and improvement is never-ending.
A complete martial art system
Shorin-ryu - from which, albeit profoundly modified, Japanese styles such as Shotokan, Shito-ryu, and Wado-ryu originated - is a system of authentic combat and self-defense. Our program includes in-depth study of:
- Tuidi: joint manipulations and submission techniques.
- Bogu Kumite: full contact combat with protective gear.
- Kyusho: study of vital points.
- Bojutsu and Koshiki Bojutsu: use of the traditional stick and full-contact combat.
Our goal is to preserve and transmit the spirit, techniques, and deepest values of traditional Karate.
SHIDOKAN SHORIN-RYU 志道館 小林流
The school is directed by Master Maeshiro Morinobu (10th dan), successor to Katsuya Miyahira Sensei, President of the Okinawa Shorin-ryu Karate-do Kyokai and the Naha City Karate-do Federation. Recognized in 2020 as an Intangible Cultural Property of Okinawa Prefecture, Maeshiro Sensei was one of the four Grand Masters chosen in 2018 to represent Okinawan martial arts in front of the Emperor of Japan.
The Origins: Shidokan Shorin-ryu
Founded in 1948 by Master Katsuya Miyahira - a student of the legendary Choshin Chibana, Anbun Tokuda, and Motobu Choki - the Shidokan school was established in the postwar period with the mission of forging in young people the strength of mind necessary to overcome any adversity. As Chibana Sensei's official heir, Miyahira preserved and passed down the purest essence of his Karate, a tradition that continues today under the guidance of Maeshiro Sensei.
The term Shidokan means "Hall of the way of the determined Spirit." The dojo's founding principles are based on four pillars:
- Perfecting one's character
- Cultivating a spirit of constant commitment
- Controlling youthful impetuosity
- Value respect and good manners
"Resolve in your heart to always follow the way. Stay close to the sun of virtue and do not stray. Believe in the power of benevolence as a support. Take pleasure in these abilities."
